BSE Sensex rises on govt hopes
The BSE Sensex climbed 0.32 percent on Tuesday, led by a surge in blue-chip and banking stocks.
The 30-share benchmark index ended 56.47 points higher at 17440.87 with 18 of its components closing in the green.
The broader 50-share National Stock Exchange (NSE) Nifty index ended 0.39 percent or 20.25 points higher at 5274.00 on Tuesday.
Lenders such as State Bank of India gained on hopes of a government capital infusion while Finance Minister P Chidambaram's assurances over tax evasion laws bolstered investor confidence.
