Mahesh, Bopanna dropped from Davis Cup team
The All India Tennis Association (AITA) on Saturday dropped tennis stars Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna from the Davis Cup team that will face New Zealand in the Asia/Oceania Zone Group I in September.
Tennis star Leander Paes has pulled out his name from the Davis Cup tie against New Zealand that is scheduled to take place from September 14 to 16 in Chandigarh.
Leander has opted out his name due to his strenuous schedule.
The Davis Cup team is comprised of young players like Yuki Bhambri, Vishnu Vardhan, Saketh Myneni, Sanam Singh, Divij Sharan and Sri Ram Balaji.
Somdev Devvarman was not named in the team due to an injury.
The AITA gave a message to Mahesh and Bopanna that indiscipline will not be tolerated by dropping them from the squad.
Indian Tennis paradigm witnessed a drama ahead of the recently concluded London Olympics over the selection issue as Mahesh and Bopanna refused to play with Leander in the doubles event.
The AITA bowed down to players' pressure and decided to send two men's doubles teams at the London Olympics. Mahesh teamed up with Bopanna while Leander paired up with Vishnu Vardhan.
However, both the teams failed to clinch a medal for India.
