Amid stringent directions of the Supreme Court regarding protection of the tigers, the demand for declaration of Pilibhit as 'Tiger Reserve Area' has gained momentum in Uttar Pradesh.
The apex court has expressed its concern on the declining count of the tigers several times.
This district of Uttar Pradesh has around 11, 281 hectares land as forest area. However, the lackadaisical attitude of the state government towards the conservation of tigers has become a major cause of concern.
As per the count done last year, there were 41 tigers and four leopards in the forest area here.
However in May, two tigers and one leopard were found dead in the woods in Haripur range.
Last week too, a tiger was found dead. In the autopsy, it was found that the tigers were given poison.
The forest officials still lack any concrete policy to protect tigers.
