Chandy, Radhakrishnan to visit rain-hit areas in Kerala

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan will visit flood-ravaged areas in Kannur and Kozhikode Districts of Kerala tomorrow.

Sources said here today both the dignitories, who will be reaching Iritty in Kannur in the morning, would later tour the affected areas -- Cherusserymala, Kodenchery, Pullooranpara and Manjuvayal -- in this district to take stock of the sitution.

Prior to that, Government Chief Whip P C George and SC/ST and Youth Affairs Minister P K Jayalakshmi would also visit the affected areas separately tomorrow, they said.

Officials of Geology Department would undertake a study in Chrusserymala, where inhabitants had witnessed changes in the climatical conditions and heard certain typical sounds prior to the calamity that claimed nine lives and caused wide-spread destruction in flash floods triggered by torrential rain on August 7 and 8, Kozhikode District Collector K V Mohan Kumar told reporters.

Efforts were also on on a war-footing to restore electricity and telephone connections in the affected areas, he added.
