Gambhir crosses 5000-run mark in ODIs

Indian opener Gautam Gambhir today achieved a milestone of completing 5000 ODI runs in the fifth one dayer against Sri Lanka at Pallekele.

The southpaw reached the feat in the fifth over with a pull shot off Lasith Malinga. Gambhir achieved the feat in his 139th match for India.

Gambhir, who made his ODI debut against Bangladesh at Dhaka in 2003, averages over 40 with a strike rate of 86.13 in ODIs.

The dashing opener, who is known to play crucial knocks under pressure, played a pivotal role in India's the 2011 World Cup triumph as he scored 97 runs in the final under pressure against Sri Lanka.

Gambhir recently proved his captaincy credentials as well when he guided the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) win its maiden T20 trophy.

The 30-year old batsman has amassed over 3000 runs in Tests with an average of 45.26 from 48 matches.
