The Punjab government has created a separate cadre of teachers for 16-km border belt in the state, keeping in view the acute and perennial shortage of teachers in the area.

Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal today reviewed the working of Education department and said that for the past 65 years, border areas had faced a constant problem of shortage of teachers and this could be solved only by creating a separate cadre of teachers, who would remain permanently posted in the border areas.

Mr Badal was accompanied by Member of Parliament Harsimrat Kaur Badal and Education Minister Sikander Singh Maluka.

Mr Maluka informed that the Education Department had sought options from the teachers who would like to get themselves included in the border cadre.

He said that after filling the posts by options, the remaining vacant posts would be advertised for fresh recruitment.

Mr Maluka said that these teachers would permanently remain in the border cadre.
