Goa: Alleged rapist teacher arrested for suicide abetment

The Panaji police on Saturday arrested teacher Kanhaiya Naik on charges of abetment to suicide, after a yonng rape victim succumbed to her injuries following a self-immolation attempt at her home five days back.

Goa police spokesperson said the arrest was made taking cognizance of a complaint filed by the victim's father on Saturday evening.

The 17-year-old student was allegedly raped by her teacher, Kanhaiya Naik at his apartment last December. He was bailed out on July 10, 2012.

In her dying declaration, the girl had stated that she feared for her life as the accused teacher was bailed out on July 10, 2012.

She had set herself on fire this Tuesday when her father was at work and siblings in schools. Her mother was at their hometown in Nepal.

The rape trial is yet to begin in the Goa Children's Court. This fresh case on abetment to suicide will be probed separately, a senior police officer said.

The autopsy on the girl's body was conducted by the forensic doctors at Goa Medical College and Hospital. The body will be handed over to the family for final rites.
