An underage rape victim allegedly attempted suicide by setting herself on fire at her residence in Goa Tuesday afternoon.

She was rushed to the state-run Goa Medical College and Hospital and her condition is reported to be critical.

The Panaji Police said the Sub Divisional Magistrate is already called to record her dying declaration.

It is however not clear whether the girl set herself on fire or it was accidental fire. Panaji police inspector Rajendra Prabhudesai said that the girl was with her grandmother when the incident happened.

"Her parents were at work and her siblings were in the school. She was with her grandmother at home but the grandmother is so old that she cannot speak," he informed.

The 17-year-old victim was allegedly raped by her own school teacher Kanhaiya Naik, in his mid-30s, at his flat on December 29, 2011. As per the ongoing investigation in the case, the accused had also clicked her nude pictures.

The police had initially registered a case of molestation but after the medical examination confirmed sexual assault, he was arrested for rape.

It is learnt that the student was under tremendous pressure after the alleged rapist was bailed out a fortnight ago. The High Court granted him bail after more than 6 months he spent in the jail.
