28 killed in Northeast road mishaps

Guwahati, July 21 : At least 28 people were killed and 26 others injured in four separate road mishaps in Assam, Mizoram and Manipur on Saturday, officials said.

Five people were killed in a road accident in Assam's Sonitpur district in the wee hours of Saturday, police said.

"The incident took place at NH-52 near Barangabari area under Gahpur police station in the district, when a car (AS- skidded off the road and fell into roadside ditch, in which five youths died on the spot," a police official said.

In another incident, one person was killed and six others were injured at Maroi area near Sipajhar in Darrang district in the evening, when a passenger bus skidded off the road after its driver lost control on the vehicle.

The deceased was identified as Pulak Nath.

The injured were rushed to hospital.

In Mizoram, at least 18 people were killed and 17 others injured, when a overloaded bus fell into a gorge at Keifang village on Staurday.

In Manipur, four people were killed and three others injured, when a car skidded off from the road near Khongsang area in Western Manipur on Saturday morning.

The injured were admitted to local hospital.
