Punjab to go for direct election of Sarpanches: Rakra

Fatehgarh Sahib, Jul 18 : Surjit Singh Rakhra Minister for Rural Development and Panchayats said the state government will conduct direct election of Sarpanches in villages.

Talking to mediapersons at village Haripur, Rakhra said the state government is also contemplating to create wards in villages like towns to conduct elections for overall development of the villages.

Rakhra advocated more powers to panchyats and said officers will not be allowed to misuse their grants. He said Junior Engineers and Panchyats secretary concerned will be responsible for misuse of grants.

He said there will be audit of all records of village panchyats, block samitis and Zila Parsiahd works and for this purpose special training programme will be started for emp;oyees. He said there will be total transparency in the work and all records of the department will be computerised.

He said the grant received by every village will be mentioned on board put up in the village. He said panchyats will be provided homes for homeless people irrespective of their caste. On this occasion, Zila Parishad Chairperson Rajinder Kaur Salana and SAD joint secretary Zora Singh Gill were also present.
