Workshop on Community Conserved Areas in Nagaland
Kohima, Jul 17 : A two-day workshop on Community Conserved Areas (CCA) and Framework for Management Plans organised by Nagaland Empowerment of People through Economic Development (NEPED) and Foundation for Ecological Security, got underway here today.
Addressing the inaugural function as the Chief Guest, Nagaland Commissioner and Secretary Temjen Toy said every resource management should have beneficial services for livelihood of the community.
He said that there is a need to empower the people with ideas and to work on understanding the traditional knowledge in the process of managing resources.
He also emphasized on the need to follow scientific model for better management of plan and beneficial conservation.
Saying that CCA involvement in management planning very important, Mr Toy urged upon the participants to be active in sharing the needs and problems and find means for beneficial management and conservation.
He expressed the hope that something tangible will come out of the workshop which may economically benefit the State.
In his welcome address, Team leader NEPED and Commissioner and Secretary Nagaland, Amardeep S. Bhatia informed that the Foundation for Ecological Security partnering with NEPED works towards locating forests and other natural resources and for the protection and improvement of such resources.
Executive Director, FES, Jagdeesh Rao gave a briefing on the workshop objectives where he said that there is a need to mainstream conservation alongside the dominant notions of development so as to integrate concerns of sustainable use of the resources and ensure livelihood security of the people. NEPED and FES have initiated the preparation of a management and conservation plan for one CCA to comprehend various issues involved in developing such plans. He further underlined the need to bring together experiences of evolving conservation and management plan from across the country as well as share the experiences so far in the context CCAs of Nagaland.
