India's software/services market growing

Kolkata, Mar 21 : India's share in world software/services market in 2011-12 is estimated to have gone up to 9 per cent from 7.8 per cent in 2010-11, according to the data compiled by the Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council (ESC).

These estimates are found in the Statistical Year Book 2011-12 released by the ESC on Thursday to coincide with the Indiaosft 2013, being held in Kolkata.

The publication was released by West Bengal Industry and Information Technology Minister Partha Chatterjee, who inaugurated the event.

The publication contains a detailed analysis of India's electronics, computer software/services and ITeS industry exports. World software and services market is dominated by the US (38 per cent) followed by Japan (12 per cent) as on 2011-12.

Another interesting statistics revealed in the publication is that India, on an average, exports to 150 countries in the past five years. However, during the year 2010-11, India exported only to 142 countries.

The US continues to occupy the top slot in the exports, accounting for 57.95 per cent (estimates) during 2011-12, up from 51.65 per cent clocked in 2010-11. With a share of 21.76 per cent in 2011-12, the UK occupies the second slot.

Singapore emerged as the third largest country followed by Australia for India's software and services exports during 2011-12. The other major countries for India's software exports are UAE, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Canada and Finland.

The ESC analysis reveals that of the total production of computer software/services industry was estimated at Rs 91,765 crore (US$ 19118 million) in 2011-12.

Of this, 78 per cent was exported and 22 per cent production was to cater to the domestic requirements. Export of computer software/ services (including ITeS/BPO) registered a growth of 24.38 per cent (18.06 per cent in dollar terms).

In value terms, export of IT software/services in 2011-12 was estimated at Rs 240700 crore (US$ 50.14 billion).

During the year 2011-12, export of ITeS/BPO estimated to have registered a growth of 13.64 per cent (7.87 per cent in dollar terms). In value terms, it works out at Rs 85800 crore (US$ 17.87 billion).
