Oppn LDF stages walk-out over price hike

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 20 : The Opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF) members in Kerala Assembly today staged a walk-out in protest against the failure of the state government to take effective steps to contain hoarding of food grains and control hike in the prices of essential commodities.

Seeking the leave of the House to move an adjournment motion, Mr V S Sunil Kumar of the CPI said that ration rice meant for 1.2 million families in the state had landed in black market and there was no effort from the government's side to contain hoarding of food grains.

However, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Anoop Jacob termed as baseless the allegations by levelled the Opposition that the government was taking steps to contain price hike. Strong measures would be taken against those involved in hoarding of food grains.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy pointed out that the problems could be solved to an extet if the food grain subsidy for the poor reached directly to their bank account.

When the Speaker rejected the notice for admissibility of the adjournment motion in view of the minister's reply, the entire Opposition staged a walk-out in the house.
