Karnataka Assembly polls on May 5, counting on May 8

New Delhi, Mar 20 : Karnataka will go to the polls in a single phase on May 5, the Election Commission announced today.

Chief Election Commissioner(CEC) V S Sampath told a news conference that the counting of votes will be taken up on May 8.

With the announcement of poll dates, the model code of conduct has come into force in Karnataka with immediate effect.

The tenure of the current 224-member Karnataka Assembly is to come to an end on June 3.

The announcement of poll dates came after a meeting of top election officials with Union Home Secretary R K Singh on the availability of security forces for the smooth conduct of polls in the southern state.

CEC Sampath and Election Commissioners HS Brahma and SNA Zaidi had also held meetings with the Home Secretary and other officials.

Karnataka is currently ruled by BJP which is struggling ever since former Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa left the party and formed his own outfit.

Issue of notification: April 10

Last date of filing nomination: April 17

Scrutiny of nominations: April 18

Last date of withdrawal of nominations: April 20

Date of polls: May 5

Counting of votes: May 8
