Mumbai, Mar 14: Maharashtra home minister R R Patil today said in the Legislative Council that despite the drop in number of accidents on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway as compared to last year, the casualty figure has, however, on rise.

Replying to a question raised by Sanjay Dutt (Congress) during zero hour pertaining to safety on Mumbai-Pune Expressway, Mr Patil acknowledged that it is a serious issue and said the accident figure has declined during last year, but the figure of casualty has gone up.

Mr Patil admitted that the Expressway is one of the international level, but indicated safety measures are not up to the international standard. He said government has taken several steps in order to improve safety measures.

Considering the gravity of the issue, chairman Shivajirao Deshmukh decided to hold a debate on the issue for one-hour tomorrow.
