Fire at Chennai airport disrupts flights
Chennai, Mar 12 : A fire broke out at the Chennai Airport's Air Traffic Control (ATC) room and affected the incoming as well departing flights for almost four hours on Tuesday morning, said reports.
According to the authorities, the fire broke out at around 2:30 am due to the burst of batteries of a UPS.
"There was a small fire by the bursting of batteries. And there were flight disruptions from 2:30 am to 5:15 am. Around 5:15 we started the departures," Chennai Airport director Suresh was quoted as saying.
The fire was however doused within 20 minutes by five fire engines.
No casualty was reported but computers and the ceiling in the ATC hall was damaged in the fire, reports said.
While, there was a huge gathering of the waiting passengers at the airport, all incoming flights had to be diverted to other airports.
At least six international flights' services were as well affected due to the fire.
A probe has been ordered to detect the cause of the fire.
"We will be following standard procedures, for the fire enquiry and safety assessment," Suresh was quoted as saying.
