Omani tourists to India advised not to carry rupees amid 'fake currency cases'
Manama, Mar 4 : The Indian mission in Muscat has issued an advisory urging Omanis as well as non-resident Indians not to carry Indian currency while travelling to the country.
The warning comes in the wake of recent troubles for Omanis in fake currency cases in India.
A spokesperson for the Indian embassy said in a press release that 'the cases of fake currency involving Omani visitors in the recent past are a cause for concern for the government and thus we need to clarify regulations on Indian currency,' Gulf news reports.
The embassy release stated that as per the Government of India regulations, only residents of India, are allowed to carry Indian currency, up to 7,500 rupees, while travelling abroad or returning to their home country.
All foreigners as well as non-resident Indians are not permitted to carry any Indian currency while going to India or leaving the Indian shores, the report said.
However, non-Indian nationals visiting India, can carry foreign currency worth 5,000 dollras in cash or an overall of 10,000 dollars when combined with other financial instruments such as cheques, travellers' cheques, drafts etc, it added.
