5.2 earthquake shakes northeast India

Guwahati, Mar 2 : A moderate intensity earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale rocked northeast India, including Assam, on Saturday, officials said.

The epicentre of the earthquake, that struck at 7 am, was located in latitude 24.8 degree north and longitude 92.2 degree east along the Indo-Bangladesh border in Karimganj area of Assam, the Indian Meteorological Department said on its website.

The tremor was felt in several areas in northeast India including Kohima, Itanagar, Guwahati, Agartala and Imphal.

The tremor was also felt in parts of neighbouring Bangladesh, reports said.

No casualty was reported.

Minor cracks were reported in some buildings in Meghalaya capital Shillong.
