Corinthians considering Libertadores withdrawal
Rio de Janeiro, Feb 24 : Corinthians are reportedly considering withdrawing from Copa Libertadores, protesting a decision to ban the club's supporters from the rest of this year's tournament.
A boycott of the South American elite club competition has been discussed by the Brazilian club's board and could be ratified Monday if an appeal against the ban is overturned, reports Xinhua.
South American football's governing body Conmebol made the ruling Thursday, after 14-year-old Bolivian fan Kevin Beltran was struck by a flare allegedly thrown by travelling Corinthians supporters.
Corinthians claimed that they were made unfair scapegoats for the incident which occurred during the first half of their 1-1 draw against San Jose in the Bolivian city of Oruro. An unnamed Corinthians source questioned why charges had not been laid against San Jose or the operator of the Jesus Bermudez Stadium.
"If the appeal is rejected then you are going to see a fight," the official was quoted saying.
Bolivian police have charged two Corinthians fans with homicide and 10 others with being accessories to the crime.
