By John Edwards, Panaji, Feb 18 : A senior Goa jail official was issued a summon notice by the Goa State Human Rights Commission directing him to appear before the commission on March 6, 2013.
Aguada Jail Superintendent Gopal Parsekar got the notice on a complaint filed by a recently released murder convict Suhas Joshi charging prison authorities of siphoning off money, he earned during recreational activities in the jail in 2008-09.
The Maharashtra-native convict has complained to the Commission that his "hard-earned money" -- while serving life sentence in the jail -- which amounted to Rs 14,000 has been misappropriated by jail officials. "Fifty percent of monthly remuneration I earned while working in the Handicrafts Unit in the Cell was contributed to victim relief fund but this never reached my family in Goa," he alleged. The Prisons Department has rubbished allegations. (Reporting )
