Graft behind rising water bills in Delhi: Kejriwal
New Delhi, Feb 16 : Aam Adami Party leader Arvind Kejriwal Sunday accused the Delhi Jal Board of corruption, alleging that it had led to massive rise in water bills.
Citing replies to Right To Information queries and other documents, Kejriwal alleged that in January 2011, 47 million gallon daily (MGD) of raw water was supplied to the board's Sonia Vihar water treatment plant.
But the Delhi government claimed a much higher production of 137 MGD, he claimed at a press conference.
However, he alleged that payments were received for 47 MGD only and the government said the rest of the water got leaked or was stolen.
It fudged the figures and created an artificial Non Revenue Water (NRW) of 65.7 percent and on the pretext of reducing NRW awarded the project to a private company, Kejriwal alleged.
Non revenue water is the water for which the board fails to collect revenue.
He alleged that because of awarding contracts to the private company, the water bill has gone up.
