US footballer Robbie Rogers 'comes out of the closet'
London, Feb 16 : American footballer Robbie Rogers has revealed that he is gay and is retiring from football, in an online post.
The former Leeds United player, who penned down the revelations in a blog, has said that for the past 25 years of his life, he was afraid of revealing his sexuality because of fear that judgement and rejection would hold him back from his career and aspirations, Sky News reports.
Rogers added that he would always be thankful for his career as football was an escape from his secret identity, and added that the sport helped him move forward through his fears.
Implying about facing disappointment from his family, Rogers said that it is difficult to convince them about his sexuality and added that even for him it is difficult to accept the fact.
Rogers said that now that he had come out of the closet, he felt free and intended to live his life in his own way.
Rogers won 18 caps for the US national team between 2009 and 2011, the report added.
Impeded by injury, Rogers made just four appearances for Leeds after signing a deal to play for the Championship side in January 2012.
