Johannesburg, Feb 16 : Paralympic athlete and Olympic medalist Oscar Pistorius of South Africa, who shot dead his girlfriend at his home in the Silverwoods Country Estate in Pretoria, was formally charged with murder on Friday, reports said.
Oscar's family, however, rejected the charge.
"Appearing in court in Pretoria, Mr Pistorius wept as prosecutors vowed to pursue a charge of premeditated murder," BBC reported
"An application for bail was postponed until next Tuesday and the athlete will remain in police custody," it reported.
Oscar's family and management company said in a statement after the hearing: "Firstly, and most importantly, all our thoughts today must be with the family and friends of Reeva Steenkamp."
"Oscar Pistorius has appeared in court here in Pretoria this morning formally charged with the murder of Reeva Steenkamp. The alleged murder is disputed in the strongest terms," his family said.
Oscar was seen crying in the court on Friday, reports said.
Oscar on Thursday shot dead his girlfriend at his home in the Silverwoods Country Estate in Pretoria after what he said he apparently thought she was a burglar. He was then arrested.
According to reports, Pistorius's model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp died after he shot at her Thursday morning.
She was shot four times and bullets hit her head and chest, reports said.
