Food bill: Centre-states discussion today
New Delhi, Feb 13 : The National Food Security Bill is expected to come up for discussion between food minister K.V. Thomas and representatives of states today, said NDTV.
The ambitious legislation of the UPA government and aims to cover up to 75 per cent rural and 50 per cent urban population.
Providing subsidized food to such a huge number of people is expected to cost the government more than Rs 1 lakh crore.
The Bill was introduced in the Winter Session of Parliament in December 2010 and it was then sent to a Parliament Standing Committee for its recommendations.
The committee submitted it report to the Lok Sabha Speaker last month, the report added.
However, several Non-Congress states have expressed their dissatisfaction over various provisions in the bill.
