Bangalore, Feb 12 : The Union Government has approved two schemes proposed by the Coffee Board relating to government support for mechanisation of coffee plantation and rainfall insurance scheme for coffee (RISC), both of which will be implemented during the 12th five year plan.
Shortage of labour, untimely and erattic rainfall and pests were the major challenges faced by the growers.
Karnataka Districts of Kodagu, Chikmagalur and Hassan Districts produce nearly 70 per cent of the country's coffee while a number of growers are small and medium land holders.
Encouraged mechanisation of farm operations in coffee estates with the aim of improving labour efficiency and substituting the shortage of farm workers, especially carrying out skill-based operations will be done.
This would also help in timely completion of cultural operations and improve production and productivity of coffee estates.
