MK seeks to remove 'inequity' in drought aid to ryots

Chennai, Feb 12 : DMK President and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today appealed to the State Government to announce uniform enhanced relief for crop loss due to drought to ryots across Tamil Nadu.

In a release here, Mr Karunanidhi claimed the Tamil Nadu Government had announced all the districts, except Chennai, as drought-hit.

He said the samba and kurvai crop planted 11.20 lakh acre in Cauvery Delta districts had been destroyed.

In these cirumstances, the AIADMK Government had announced drought relief for delta ryots who suffered over 50 per cent crop damage instead of giving aid to all the farmers who suffered crop loss in all districts, causing angst among the farming community.

While the government announced Rs 13,692 as minimum compensation for those suffering over 50 per cent crop loss in delta districts, the same was not specified for farmers in non-delta districts.
