Indian teacher raped in Maldives; New Delhi takes up issue with country
New Delhi, Feb 12 : India has taken up strongly with Maldivesthe issue of the brutal rape of a 24-year-old Indian teacher in aatoll of the island country.
The Indian Mission in Male has rushed two lady officers to the
place of incident to provide the much needed support to the victim, and was in touch the Minister concerned of the country, Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said while replying to a question at a media briefing here today.
The assault had left the victim injured and she had to undergo
blood transfusion, but her condition was stable now, he said.
The teacher was working in private computer school. Mr Akbaruddin said Maldives had assured of prompt action into the matter.
According to media report from Male, the incident took place in
the island of Dhangethi in Alif Dhaal Atoll. Some people are reported to have broken into her house on Sunday night and committed the heinous act.
This is said to be the second case of the rape of an Indian in
Maldives in the past two years. In 2011, a nurse was allegedly raped in one of the islands of the country.
