Suryanelli gang rape: BJP demands Kurien quit on moral ground
New Delhi, Feb 12 : The Bharatiya Janata Party today demanded that Congress leader and Deputy Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha P J Kurien quit on moral grounds in the wake of allegations against him in connection with the 1996 Suryanelli gangrape case.
''New revelations everyday in Suryanelli rape case has made P J Kurien's position as Deputy Chairperson of Rajya Sabha untenable,'' BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said at a press conference here.
Mr Javadekar said two general secretaries of the BJP's Kerala unit met the party's Central leaders and apprised them of all the facts related to the matter.
''The BJP after consulting with its state unit demands that on moral grounds he should quit the office till he is absolved of the charges against him,'' Mr Javadekar said.
When asked whether the BJP will raise the issue in Parliament, he said the party will wait for Mr Kurien's step.
However, Mr Kurien has been claiming that various courts had exonerated him in the case.
