Sambalpur, Feb 12 : Jharsuguda Collector and district magistrate Bishnu Prasad Sahu has served show cause notice to Vedanta Aluminium Ltd (VAL) for violation of the pollution norms.

Sources said the VAL has not taken necessary permission as per 1986 Environment Protection Act for the construction of this 2.5 lakh tonne per annum Aluminium plant at Jharsuguda.

The Union Ministry of Environment and Forest has earlier warned about the irregularities and informed the state government about the violation of the pollution guidelines by the Vedanta Aluminium.

Since the construction has been made without the permission of the MoEF, it asked the state government to take appropriate action against the company and accordingly the Jharsuguda district magistrate has served show cause notice VAL.

The district magistrate asked the Vedanta authorities as to why action would not be taken against the company as it had grossly violated Sec 15 and 16 of the Environment Protection Act 1986. The district collector has fixed February 28 for hearing in his court, sources said.

When contacted VAL PRO Pranaya Satapathy claimed that they have executed works strictly in adherence with pollution control norms. He said if any irregularity has been committed unknowingly, the company we will try to get it rectified.
