Shootout in Bhanjanagar Sub jail, one inmate killed
Berhampur, Feb 12 : One jail inmate of the sub jail in Bhanjanagar, about 80 km from here, in Ganjam district was killed during a shootout, while two others were injured during an encounter with the police while trying to escape from the jail.
Police said while Dandeswar Swain alias Kalia of Hinjilicut died in the incident, two undertrial prisoners (UTP) Manoj Pradhan and Bapi Mishra, who escaped from the jail after the shootout, were nabbed.
Deceased Dandeswar was an accused in Hinjili double murder case during 2010. The shootout took place at about 1615 hours and Manoj Pradhan, an UTP triggered a revolver, Bhanjanagar sub jail Jailor Govind Sur said.
Prior to the shootout, Bubun, brother of Dandeswar Swain alias Kalia, Kuna brother of Manoj Pradhan and Anil brother of Bapi Mishra met the three undertrial prisoners inside the sub jail.
The jailor said during interview Kuna Pradhan gave a fruit packet to Manoj Pradhan in which a revolver was concealed. He said some of the UTPs threatened him after he foiled an attempt to supply liquor bottles to the jail inmates by outsiders.
Jail warder Satya Narayan Dora alleged that Mannoj Pradhan and Bapi Mishra fired at him but the bullet hit Dandeswar Swain alias Kalia on the head and he died on the spot.
Soon after the incident, the security measures in the Bhanjanagar sub jail was tightened.
Bhanjanagar police nabbed both Manoj Pradhan and Bapi Mishra after an encounter and seized two mousers and 11 live bullets from them, Ganjam Superintendent of Police Ashis Singh.
