Gujarat: BJP sweeps municipal polls
Ahmedabad, Feb 13 : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday won 47 of the 76 municipal corporation elections held across the state on Sunday.
The Congress managed to win nine.
Most important among the wins for the BJP was that of Salaya municipality in Jamnagar district of Saurashtra, where 90 per cent of the population is Muslim.
The BJP put up Muslim candidates in 24 of the 27 seats there and all of them won. The Congress failed to win a single seat.
"Thankful to people of Guj for the continued faith in us.Congrats to BJP Karyakartas for major win in municipality polls (sic)," Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi wrote on Twitter after the win.
During the state elections last December, the Congress had questioned Modi's secularism when he did not field even a single Muslim candidate.
"It's a reply to those who have been targeting the chief minister. It's not about religion or caste, it's about good governance. The people of Salaya have voted for good governance,'' BJP spokesman Jagdish Bhavsar was quoted as saying.
