Rural poll: BJP worker killed in Cachar, 50 injured
Silchar, Feb 12 : A BJP worker was killed by suspected miscreants at a polling station at Satkorakandi village under Sonai circle in Cachar district today afternoon while polling for rural elections in Barak Valley areas of Assam witnessed group clashes, rigging, snatching and destroying of ballots leading to injuring at least 50 people.
Police fired in air in two places in Karimganj and Hailakandi districts. The mob attacked Nilambazar police station in Karimganj district.
Police said Alta Hussain Laskar alias Dhola Pakhi (55) was lynched at polling station No 60 at 471 Majhirgram LP School under Satkorakandi gaon panchyayat in Sonai circle of Cachar district by suspected Congress workers during the day.
Sources said when Congress supporters tried to rig the poll in the booth, Laskar, a senior BJP worker tried to prevent them. In retaliation they lynched him and he died on the spot. He was later brought to Sonai Civil Hospital where the doctors declared brought dead.
The incident sparked tension in the area and soon voting was suspended and polling personnel left the booth, an official said. Contingent police forces rushed to the spot to contain the situation.
Reports said at least 35 people, including four policemen, were injured, several of them seriously, when villagers attacked the Nilambazaar police station in Karimganj district. In the afternoon, some miscreants snatched a ballot box at polling station No 601 at Maijdihi LP School in the border district and threw it into a pond. This led to a clash between supporters of two political parties. Police rushed to the spot and baton charged them. Later angry villagers attacked the nearby Nilam bazaar police station. They started pelting stones at the police and ransacked part of the building.
Security forces first charged baton and later fired several rounds at the air to disperse the mob. The four policemen among the 35 injured sustained serious injury and they have been rushed to nearby hospital. There's tension in the area till report filed in. Security forces have been patrolling in the area.
Seven persons were injured at Patiala in Ratabari circle of Karimganj district when Congress and AIUDF workers were engaged in clashes.
Another six persons were injured when supporters of two candidates were engaged in clashes at polling station No 122 at Rangirghat LP School in Sonai of Cachar district.
One person was injured at polling station No 21 of Kandigram LP School, Hatirhar in Cachar district when miscreants were engaged in snatching of ballots and pouring of ink on them.
Later police fired blank to bring the situation under control at Anwarpar LP School poling station in Hailakandi district when Congress and AIUDF workers were engaged in clashes.
In Katigora circle near Bangladesh border, polling was suspended in eight polling booths due to clashes between supports of Congress, AIUDF, BJP and Independents.
Reports of snatching of ballots, pouring ink or water on them, tempering of ballot boxes poured in from several polling stations across the valley. Opposition parties alleged inaction of the police and administration behind all such incidents.
