Nalanda University will strengthen cultural bond with Buddhit countries

Biharsharif, Feb 12 : External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid today said the setting up of Nalanda University would prove to be an important milestone in strengthening cultural and religious relations with Buddhist countries across the globe.

Addressing a meeting of Parliamentary Committee of External Affiars at Rajgir, Mr Khurshid said Rajgir and its surrounding region were origin Centre of Buddhism and Jainism.

"The setting up of Nalanda University in this region would add new dimension to cultural relationship with Buddhist countries," Mr Khurshid said, adding that Nalanda University was world famous in ancient period and after a long gap in history, the venture of restablishing Nalanda University would help in regaining the past glory of the country in education sector.

Mr Khurshid said the Central government was serious to ensure that Nalanda University could be established without any hurdle and budgetary allocation would be made in Union budget for providing sufficient fund to achieve the goal.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, also participated briefly in the meeting and said the dream of establishing world class Nalanda University would turn into reality only with the sincere support of the Central government.

He also expressed his gratitude for the assistance being provided by the Centre for the purpose.
