Mumbai auditor arrested for accepting bribe in Goa

Panaji, Feb 12 : An assistant audit officer from CAG, Mumbai office, was caught red handed in a raid by CBI, while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 in Goa, police said.

The team, led by by SP Prem Kumar and PI Nilesh Shirodkar, laid a trap after complainant B. Shetye, the canteen contractor of the National Institute of Tecnology, said audit officer S Chedda was demadning a bribe for waiving off service tax of Rs 3,60,000.

Even after the contractor insisted that he was not supposed to pay him any service tax as NIT was an educational institution and food was served at a subsidised rate, the officer refused to listen and demanded the bribe to settle everything.

Shetye was yesterday asked to deliver the money at Panaji in the capital city.

Accordingly, the raid was planned and the money was delivered outside the EPF office at Patto. Chedda was arrested while accepting marked currency notes and he was later arrested and booked under section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
