New Delhi, Feb 12 : India has made a thorough investigation into the attack on an Israeli diplomat in New Delhi last year, Israeli Ambassador Alon Ushpiz said Tuesday while accusing Iran of targeting people of his country.
In a statement marking a year of the daylight attack on Israeli diplomat Tal Yehoshua Koren here, Ushpiz said his country had found support from the people of India after the incident.
"In the days, weeks and months following this terrorist action, we were embraced by a wave of support and friendship from the government and the people of India. We are grateful for this and for the security that the Indian authorities provided us," he said.
He said Yehoshua Koren was targeted by "Iranian government agents who attempted to assassinate her" a year ago when she was on her way to pick up her two children from school.
The ambassador said that following a "thorough investigation", Delhi Police made one arrest and issued arrest warrants against four Iranian culprits who have escaped.
"It is understood that the Iranian authorities did not provide answers to Indian officials who travelled to Tehran to gather information about these suspects," Ushpiz said in the statement.
"The terrorists who committed this heinous attack and the government of Iran that sent them, must be made accountable," the statement added.
Ushpiz said Koren was still suffering from her wounds and noted that her driver and two bystanders, all Indian citizens, were also injured in the attack.
He said India had assured the Israeli leadership that the culprits will be brought to justice at the earliest, that the law of the land will take its course and that India will continue with the investigation.
A Delhi Police team probing the incident, in which four Iranian nationals are allegedly involved, had visited Iran mid-August.
According to Delhi Police, the suspected Iranians performed reconnaissance at the Israeli embassy in May 2011 before returning to New Delhi last year to plan the Feb 13 attack.
A freelance journalist, Mohammed Kazmi, was arrested March last year in connection with the attack on the Israeli diplomat. He was granted bail by the Supreme Court in October last year.
Koren had suffered multiple injuries when a motorcycle rider attached a magnetic explosive device to her car and sped away. Within seconds, the device exploded with a thunderous sound, setting the car on fire. Three other people were also injured.
