Nine dead in US blizzzard
New York, Feb 10 : A blizzard packing hurricane-force winds struck the northeastern United States on Saturday and killed at least nine people, latest reports said.
Around 700,000 homes and businesses were left without power and travel came to a grinding halt as the storm dumped more than three feet of snow across the Northeast.
Wind gusts of 80 miles an hour cut power lines and uprooted trees.
Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts were the worst affected by the storm, media reports said.
More than 5,000 flights from some 60 airports were cancelled on Friday and Saturday, according to FlightAware, which tracks airline delays.
The blizzard brought back memories of Hurricane Sandy that hammered the same region last year, leaving over 100 people dead in the United States.
The storm, spawned by the collision of two weather systems, reportedly affected more than 40 million people.
