Kozhikode, Feb 9 : Ruling out political agenda in the hanging of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, Minister of State for Home Mullapppally Ramachandran today said the execution early this morning in Delhi's Tihar Jail was not eying the 2014 general election in the country.

Talking to reporters here, he said there was nothing unusual in the execution following refusal of his mercy plea by President Pranab Mukherjee on February 3 and the action was not so prolonged.

On the ongoing controversy over linking Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairperson P J Kurien in the infamous 1996 Surneynelli rape case in the wake of Supreme Court verdict to re-probe the case, Mr Mullappally said he backed the opinion aired by Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) Chief Ramesh Chennithala on the issue.

He said no one can be put on trial in a particular case twice as per law.

Firmly extending support to Prof Kurien, Mr Chennithala said the party would face the challenge paused by demands of his stepping down by various outfits politically and legally.
