Afzal hanging is political gimmick: Ramdev
Allahabad, Feb 9 : Yoga guru turned anti-corruption activist Baba Ramdev on Saturday said the hanging of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru now was but a political gimmick to appease the Hindu community after giving terrorism colours like saffron.
"This is vote bank politics of the government to divide the Hindus and Muslims. First they talk of Hindu terrorism and now they hang a Muslim terrorist to appease Hindus," Baba Ramdev said at the Maha Kumbh venue in Allahabad.
Addressing a press conference, Baba Ramdev said, "By hanging Afzal Guru you are not doing any favour to anyone and you are still going to lose elections. The taint in your clothes is just too deep. It will not go with any washing powder or chemical," said Baba Ramdev who visited several holy men's camps (akharas) at Maha Kumbh on the eve of the Sahi Snan (royal bathing) on Feb 10.
"And please do not call him a Guru. You better call him Mohammed Afzal only and avoid linking his name to the saints and real gurus," said Baba Ramdev.
Afzal Guru was hanged at Delhi's Tihar Jail on Saturday morning at around 8 am. He was lodged in the jail for about eight years.
