Chennai, Feb 8 : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today said all the 31 districts in the state, barring Chennai, would be declared drought-hit, while announcing an enhanced assistance package amounting to Rs 2,143.60 crore for the farmers in Cauvery Delta Areas who were affected by withering of crops due to lack of monsoon and non-release of Cauvery water by Karnataka for irrigation.
Replying to the debate on motion of thanks to the Governor for his Address in the State Assembly, she said her government would also draft a 'Drought Memorandum' and send it to the Centre seeking relief assistance for the entire state.
Recalling the earlier relief assistance announced by her to the farmers, Ms Jayalalithaa said based on the report submitted by the high-level committee, headed by Finance Minister O Panneerselvam which toured the drought-hit areas, she was announcing enhanced assistance to the farmers.
She announced provision of Rs 15,000 per acre as compensation to farmers, whose crops were damaged for over 50 per cent, due to scarcity of water.
