New Delhi, Feb 7 : The Supreme Court on Thursday directed Karnataka to immediately release 2.44 tmc(thousand million cubic feet) of Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu in order to irrigate latter's winter crops.
The apex court gave the directions based on the report submitted by a three-member expert team that said 2.44 tmc water should be released to Tamil Nadu for irrigating standing crops.
The panel had submitted its report on Wednesday after visiting Tamil Nadu.
The Tamil Nadu had demanded for the release of 9 TMC of water in order to irrigate standing crops on six lakh acres of farmland.
