Assembly adjourned over manhandling of Bijimol

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 6 : The Kerala Assembly was adjourned amidst pandemonium today after CPI(M)-led Opposition members protested against the police action on CPI MLA E S Bijimol.

When Ms Bijimol raised the issue, Deputy Speaker N Sakthan, who was in the Chair, allowed her to explain the incident in a special mention. Earlier, she came to the House with Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan.

The MLA told the Assembly that she was manhandled by the Police in front of the State Assembly near PMG, where she was leading a protest march by the All India Democratic Women's Federation (AIDWF), demanding re-investigation into the Suryanelli rape case in which Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman P J Kurien was allegedly involved. Alleging that she lost her 'Mangalasutram' in the police action, She said other women members of the Federation were also manhandled by the Police.

As per her request, the Speaker directed the concerned official to admit her to the Medical College Hospital here for further treatment.

In his reply, Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan assurred that action would be taken after receiving a report from the ADGP in this regard.

Demanding the suspension of the erring police officials involved in the incident, the Opposition members sought the release of the agitators who were taken into police custody. When the session resumed, the Opposition leader raised the issue again and sought a detailed report on the arrest of Ms Geetha Viswam, who was taken into police custody during the agitation.
