Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, Feb 5 : The Peoples Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE), a civil group spearheading the ongoing struggle against Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP), has appealed to Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi to announce a "moratorium on nuclear energy plans and projects until the 2014 general elections."
'We request you (Rahul) to take a stand that a moratorium be announced on the nuclear energy plans and projects until the next general elections, make it a poll issue in the affected states and let the people decide our energy policies,' said SP Udhaya Kumar, Coordinator of PMANE in a letter to Mr Gandhi, a copy of which was released to the media here today.
He said several millions of people in Tamil Nadu and Kerala have been waging a peaceful and non-violent struggle for almost a quarter century against KKNPP.
As the Indian authorities unleash all kinds of atrocities on them such as dangerous cases, imprisonment, curfew, prohibitory orders, intimidation campaigns, home searches, physical attacks on their people and their properties, they are forced to seek justice from the voters of the country.
