Land campaign to begin on Feb 11
Kannur, Kerala, Feb 4 : All India Kisan Sabha General secretary Athulkumar Anjan will inaugurate the 'Bhoosamrakshana' (Land Reforms) state-level campaign on February 11 at Koothuparamba Town hall, Sathyan Mokeri, State Secretary of Kisan Sabha, said here today.
Talking to newspersons, Mr Mokeri alleged the Congress led UDF Government had sabotaged the Land Reforms Act implemented by C Achutha Menon-led government on January 1, 1970 and it became a role model for the country.
But the UDF government amended the act which resulted in a bonanza for corporates and also allowed use of five per cent of plantation plot for other purposes.
Around one lakh acres of land were obtained by land mafia which started resorts and real estate business.
The government amended the wet land and paddy field act and this also helped the land mafia, he alleged.
Mr Mokeri also said as per the government records as many as 232, 232 landless people were living in the state. Kisan Sabha, a CPI controlled farmers' organisation, has demanded the government should take necessary action to provide lands to the landless people.
The other demands of the Kisan Sabha are, 10 cents of lands given to each landless family and giving illegally functioning plantations to the landless among others.
A state convention of Kisan Sabha would be held on February 9 at Ernakulam to chalk out the agitation for land reforms campaign, said Mr Mokeri.
