New Delhi, Feb 4 : A day after President Pranab Mukherjee promulgated an ordinance for amendments in criminal law, the government today announced an action plan to combat crimes against women and improve and strengthen police and the administrative system.
An official spokesman said the action plan, which would be time-bound, would ensure prevention of crimes against women through ''quick action'', a gender sensitive response mechanism and greater accountability of enforcement agencies.
The President had promulgated an ordinance yesterday amending the criminal law.
''These measures are in addition to the Ordinance and cut across various ministries,'' the spokesman said.
The measures deal with changes in the police system, a review of the Motor Vehicles Act, measures to make responses to crimes against women efficient and sensitive and other administrative measures.
The spokesman said the Cabinet Secretary held a series of meetings recently with senior officials of the concerned ministries to formulate the action plan within an indicated time frame.
Secretaries of seven key ministries had been directed to monitor the implementation of these measures and report every month to the Cabinet Secretary and the Prime Minister's Office
