Guwahati, Feb 4 : Former Assam chief minister and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta today alleged that the ruling Congress, led by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, was violating the model code of conduct during the ongoing Panchayat elections in the state.
Addressing a press conference here, Mr Mahanta said the ruling party was 'violating all norms and the chief minister was leading from the front'.
He alleged that the Congress was distributing cash and goods, like blankets and mosquito nets, to woo the voters.
He also alleged that the ruling party workers were using muscle and money power everywhere to threat Opposition party supporters and candidates.
The AGP had also approached the state election commission and Election Commission of India, Mr Mahanta added.
He accused the government of promoting corrupt practices from the central secretariat to the Panchayat level in the state.
A three-phase Panchayat election is being held in the state, with the second phase slated for February 6.
