Kolkata, Feb 4 : To mark the World Cancer Day, Westbank Health and Wellness Institute organized Walk for Cancer, an initiative for spreading cancer awareness, here on Monday.

This cancer awareness campaign, which started from Golpark and continued till Park Circus Maidan was attended by celebrities including tabla player Bikram Ghosh, his actress wife Jaya Seal, filmmaker Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury, music composer Debajyoti Mishra, theatre actor Debshankar Halder, and theatre personality Kunal Padhy along with people from various walks of life.

"Only 5pc of cancers are hereditary. Non inherited cancer is caused by the choices people make. Irregular food habits, lack of physical activities etc, are the main causes of cancer today," said Asish Chakraborty, Executive Director, Westbank Health and Wellness Institute.

"Cancer is generally equated to death; this is the biggest human truth. It is sadly one of the biggest myths regarding cancer. Especially in India where cancer is poised to become one of leading diseases, a much more concerted campaign which breaks all these myths is imperative," he said.

"Steps should be taken to reduce the possibility of cancer and that is what Westbank aims to do. Cancer can be treated if detected early. We suggest people to follow a proper diet, go for regular check-ups and lead a healthy lifestyle.

"Our initiative essentially aims in giving the world a reason to be relieved and give them a reassurance that cancer does not mean," he said.
