Locals demand probe into illegal sand mining death of youth

Tirunelveli, Feb 4 : People of nine coastal villages have submitted a memorandum to the Tirunelveli and Tuticorin district administrations today, demanding action against illegal sand mining by an export company and a detailed probe into the mysterious death of a youth while on duty in the company at Thisayanvilai village in this southern district.

The representatives of village welfare committees of Kuthenkuzhi, Idinthakarai, Koottapuli, Perumanal, Uvari, Kooduthaazhai, Koottapanai, Periathazhai and Thomaiyarpuram in their memorandums, a copy of which was forwarded to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister alleged that the youth D Joseph Praveen (21), who was working in V V Minerals, a private Ilmenite exporter was died under mysterious circumstances while on duty on December 11, last year.

His body was taken to the government hospital at Asaripallam in Nagerocil, where a post-mortem was performed, without being informed to his relatives. Two days after his death, the body was handed over to the family.

Suspecting that the youth might have been murdered for unknown reasons, the representatives demanded a detailed probe into his death and to take stern action against the culprits behind his death.

They also urged the district administrations to check illegal sand quarrying and dumping of industrial waste into the sea by the company.
