Special bus services for women in Himachal
Shimla, Feb 4 : Himachal Road Transport Corporation(HRTC) is all set to launch a special bus service for women during evening hours.
State Transport Minister G S Bali told UNI that during evenings a special woman bus service with women conductors and a special chamber for male driver is being mooted by the department.
''Women constitute about 50 per cent of bus passengers in the state. Therefore, HRTC is duty bound to provide security net to them while travelling in buses to avert mishap like Delhi gangrape. Women feel insecure in the bus services as they have to share seats with strangers,'' Mr Bali said.
He said that such services would be on the road between 1700 hrs to 2100 hrs daily providing security to women.
HRTC has been asked by the government to design new bus having long windowpanes and without curtain with special cabin for the male driver.
UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi wants to take effective steps
to provide security cover to women outside their home. At present there are 1900 bus services available in the state and HRTC was also merging more private bus service to its existing fleet.
HRTC would enroll women conductors for such services and bus services likely to be started in early, the Minister added.
