Kozhikode, Feb 2 : The Bharatiya Janata Party in Kerala today urged Rajyasabha Deputy Chairman P J Kurian to stepdown from the post in the wake of report allegedly linking him in the infamous Suryanelli sex scam case.
Talking to reporters here BJP State Unit President V Muraleedharan said his continuance in the highest office would be against democratic norms as needle of suspicion was pointed towards him.
He said a section in the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Congress joined hands to scuttle the 1996 case relating to gangrape of a 16-year-old girl student by more than 40 people at different places in the state.
Urging the government to re-probe the case scientifically, he said this would ensure maximum punishment to all the accused in the case.
Declaring Kerala High Court verdict absolving all the accused, except one, null and void, Supreme Court yesterday directed it to restart hearing in the case and pronounce judgement in six months.
