Kozhikode, Feb 1 : Calicut University Vice-Chancellor M Abdul Salam and two of his senior colleagues were gheraoed by students for the second day today for his alleged failure to provide adequate security to girls hostel.
Police said trouble began when students supported by pro-CPI (M) Students Federation of India and the Congress-led Kerala Students Union laid a seige since last evening at the administrative block where Dr Salam, Pro Vice-Chancellor Dr Ravindra Nath and Registrar P M Joseph were present.
Police, who were summoned this morning, said cases were registered against about 200 students, including the arrested, who were demanding renovation of ladies hostel, where a student was bitten by a snake last week and admitted in the intensive care unit of the Kohzikode Medical College.
The agitators and the inmates of Administrative Block were released later on, police said.
However, the students resumed their agitation when Dr Salam arrived to address a seminar at the Seminar Block later in the day, police said, adding efforts were on to resolve the crisis through discussions between the representatives of both the parties.
Leaders of the students said Varsity authorities were adamant to provide security to the ladies' hostel despite incidents of burglary quite often, prompting them to go on stir to press their demands.
